Episode 7 (S2) of the Smith Family Manga is now available – A revealing Zoom session

Today (October 18, 2024), MMTed releases Episode 7 in the Second Season of our Manga series – The Smith Family and their Adventures with Money. Have a bit of fun with it while learning Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) and circulate it to those who you think will benefit.

The Smith Family are a middle-class family living in a city somewhere in the world. The second-generation parents are university educated and have professional occupations. Their two kids attend the local public school.

In Episode 7, with the economy mired in a deep recession following the government’s austerity push, we find the jobless Ryan out of work and deteriorating rapidly into alcohol and gambling as he tries to come to terms with his predicament.

His is a typical trajectory of a long-term unemployed person with little hope of getting a job.

The former co-presenter of the award-winning finance show on morning TV, Mary Winter has been sacked from the Finance Show for her questioning of Professor Knowitawl (see Episode 5).

The main presenter Robert Autumn was away sick and was horrified that his idol, Professor Knowitawl was forced to actually answer some questions for once.

Ryan’s behaviour is bringing the tension between him and Elizabeth to a head and it looks like it won’t turn out well for them.

Kevin has a Zoom call with family friend, Hiroshi Fujii and they discuss QE and the way banks work, which allows him to understand why crowding out is a fiction.

Hiroshi is excited by Kevin’s enthusiasm for learning economics and is always happy to pass on his experience as a senior economist at the Bank of Japan.

If you think you resemble any of the characters then either continue spreading MMT knowledge or get our textbook and get up to speed, depending on which character you might identify with.

If you have any feedback we will appreciate it, other than ‘this sucks’.
