Season 3 of the – The Smith Family and their Adventures with Money – produced by MMTed continues today (July 24, 2025). Ryan lost his job in the recession and went to pieces, drinking too much and gambling the family funds away. Elizabeth kicked him out and now, with a new mission, he has asked Elizabeth for another chance. His unemployment forced him to shift his world view and reject the austerity logic of Professor Raul Noitawl, who he had previously considered infallible. Meanwhile, banker Chris is now working a the chief policy advisor to the Opposition in the lead up to the national election and he assembles at Elizabeth’s house to discuss the Job Guarantee with Kevin and his friends. They have a lot to learn.
The Smith Family is a middle-class family living in a city somewhere in the world. The second-generation parents are university educated and have professional occupations. Their two kids attend the local public school.
Episode 2 opens with Ryan on the doorstep begging Elizabeth’s forgiveness.
She is super angry and needs more time before she will even broach some sort of second-chance.
Kevin and Brian meet up with local surf hero Tyler who tells them that he cannot get a job because employers consider him to be just an unproductive surf bum.
While out, they see a billboard advertising Ryan’s brother Aaron as the local candidate for the conservative party and his main policy is to scrap unemployment income support and force the ‘lazy bastards’ to work.
No-one is surprised by this given Aaron’s history of fast cars and flaky financial scams.
The scene shifts to the Smith home and former banker Chris Edwards turns up and tells the gang there that he is now the senior policy advisor for the Opposition and one of their key policies which they are taking into the general election will be a Job Guarantee.
Various questions are entertained from Brian, Elizabeth, Tyler, and Kevin and Chris uses these queries as a chance to educate them on the key features of the Job Guarantee and corrects the common misunderstandings that are part of the public narrative about this sort of policy intervention.
If you have any feedback we will appreciate it, other than ‘this sucks’.
The manga is available in both English and Japanese.
If you want to catch up with what happened in Seasons 1 and 2 then there is also a RECAP available, which summarises the developments.
That is enough for today!
