MMTed Q&A – Episode 5

Here is Episode 5 in our weekly MMTed Q&A series. And when you are done with the answers you can Zoom some mates and have a dance party to the music that follows. This week we further reduced the length of the Episode and focused on one big issue with a special guest.

MMTed Q&A – Episode 5

This is Episode 5 in the MMTed Q&A series.

This week I had a Zoom conversation with Dr Pavlina Tcherneva and we answered three questions about the Job Guarantee. The answers will be spread out over three episodes to keep each episode relatively short.

Pavlina has just published a book – The Case for a Job Guarantee (published by Wiley) – which provides a really great entree into the world of the Job Guarantee.

In this episode we discuss why an employment guarantee is the superior alternative to a basic income guarantee.

The video goes for 12:19 minutes.

Note the discussion is mostly via Zoom, which means at time the audio and video quality is less than first-class. But we are learning to live with that constraint.

This is the – YouTube link – for the video.

We are still experimenting with format, environments, etc.

Call for MMTed Support

We are working towards beginning course delivery in September.

But we still need significant sponsors for this venture to ensure that we can run the educational program with negligible fees and to ensure it is sustainable over time.

If you are able to help on an ongoing basis that would be great. But we will also appreciate of once-off and small donations as your circumstances permit.

You can contribute in one of two ways:

1. Via PayPal – which is our preferred vehicle for receiving donations.

The PayPal donation button is available via the MMTed Home Page or via the – Donation button – on the right-hand menu of this page (below the calendar).

2. Direct to MMTed’s Bank Account.

Please write to me to request account details.

Please help if you can.

The Spinners – Classic R&B

The Spinners were one of my favourite vocal bands from the 1960s (and on).

The Spinners formed in 1954 and only one of that formation is still singing with the band and only 2 of the original six are still alive.

This track – I’ll be Around – was released in 1972 as the B-side of a release and reached number 1 on the US R&B charts.

The studio band was the famous – MFSB – which was a loose coalition of more than 30 musicians – each one of them fabulous players who made the Motown sound what it was (and is).

Then they went disco – and the I stopped listening (mostly).

In this pandemic era, you might have to schedule a Zoom meeting with your office colleagues to arrange mutual dancing on the desk sessions to ease your anxiety. But that should be manageable.

The guitar lines (octaves etc) are magnificent.

  1. “Then they went disco – and the I stopped listening (mostly).”

Sorry Bill, I don’t think you stopped listening soon enough.

The beat and rhythm of the Spinner’s number is very reminiscent of the big disco hit “Ain’t gonna bump no more with no big fat woman.”

  2. I keep discovering great bands on Greatest Hits collections. Somehow I have a taste for slightly quirky songs. The Spinners’ _Games People Play_ is one. Also the Stylistics’ _People Make the World Go ‘Round_. And bill’s chosen song for today, and a huge number of others.
